For capturing/editing/compressing, I use the Pinnacle DV500 and like it pretty well (they've been pretty good about updating the drivers and software for it, and it integrates really well with Premiere), but if I were starting from scratch, I don't think I'd look much further than the Matrox RT.X100 (now with extra "X" factor in "Xtreme!"). I've seen a lot of demos of what that thing can do with chroma keying, and if you're looking to indulge your inner fanboi by joining the legion of Star Wars imitators on DV, that's the way to go.


I work with producers that make documentaries for Cable TV - they use Matrox gear to load their DV into Final Cut for output to beta. I know exactly jack shit about it, though, I only work with sound and music. Just confirming that Matrox is indeed being used by pros.
