Saddam's largely secular nation (compared to other Muslim nations) was the exception to this, which is one of the reasons why the US was working with them throughout the 80s. Whoops.

US and Iraq were buddy-buddies so long as Iraq was killing the Iranian fundamentalists who made us look like Shit in '79 (who, Ironically, were being supplied by the US). When the war was over, Saddam needed a scapegoat to blame for his country's ruined economy and Million+ casualties (right around the same time Bush Sr. needed a war to help jump-start the economy).

This was all happening while we were training Bin Laden in terrorist/gorilla warfare so he could fight the commies, only to leave them all high and dry when it was all over.
