Like most of this artist's works, the true estimation of their value can only be found after some extended reflection. Thus, the album which can safely be referred to as "the album after Antichrist Superstar that was still popular but was not that good" is ultimately a downturn, whereas the current album can be deemed a qualified success.
Why?
1. Manson capitalizes on his strongest source of material, which is his utter contempt for his fellow man. There is a lot he has to say in his own narcissistic manner, and it is brought to bear most effectively in this album.
2. He does so in a manner consistent with the theme of the album, which appears to be some sort of Weimar Germany hedonism motif, leavened with strong modern elements of industrial music and even some sarcastically placed hints of more pop genres.
3. The lyrics manage to enclose a Wildesque disdain for the common man along the lines of Tool's criticism of its fanbase in "Hooker with a penis". Essentially, Manson is well aware of the mediocrity of the bulk of those who buy his shit, and accepts it as the inevitable consequence of what he does.
Finally, as always, if you never liked his shit, this probably won't change your mind. I can think of few who could watch the include snuff film/stream of consciousness more than once (on the dvd), but I do know that "The Golden Age" has much to offer in the aggregate. It is arguably his finest album since Antichrist Superstar. |
