It almost universally expected that mid to low level bureaucrats would carry over into the new government, as they have done in other defeated nations. But the lack of information present to those making the decisions, like the airborne general in this article, who either really didn't know about the background of this man, or simply didn't care, is somewhat disturbing. You do not bring religious fanatics into the fold unless they are your religious fanatics (and even then...); this guy doesn't seem at all perturbed by the American presence as his refusal to even lighten the tone of his fatwa indicates.

If you are going to have ex-baathites, you need to make sure they are terrified of making a mistake.
