Rock. Well there's an interesting question. I'm going to go ahead and say no, there is no "rock", because I think they just go ahead and import rock from foreigners and concentrate on their variations on pop. There is an awful lot of techno-esque dance beat stuff under "bhangra" and probably some rock-tinged number in the Bollywood section but other than that, the rock releases on Desitorrents would be under "Misc MP3's" and with no "this is rock" qualifier state.
Many trenchant critics of 80's music argue about the pop-rock balance in popular music and contend that rock is on the rise when the economy starts to drop off, but rock requires 1. a knowledge that one is poor and 2. one didn't used to be, or one doesn't plan to be. I'm not saying any of that is true, but I am saying it would be tough to fulfill those criteria in India, the wealthiest nation on Earth. |
