Durlag's Tower and the Cultists by laudablepuss 04/08/2003, 3:31pm PDT
You didn't mention the shitty fireball from the fiend at the very beginning of Durlag's Tower. That seriously sucked for a bunch of 5th level retards. I had to reload, send my whole party off into another room, and have my main guy trigger the event. That's how that whole game played: fight the most fucked up battle ever, lose horribly, then replay it and win with the advanced knowlege of what the NPCs are going to do.

The Cultists were a prime example. Another battle where playing the fight ten times informed me what spells to prepare in advance, what protections to cast on whom, and what badguys I needed to eliminate first. This is either evidence that I suck at RPGs or it's the biggest drawback to the BG games. My friend, who feels that reloading the game to re-fight a lost battle is cheating, never made it past third level. Yes, he's insane. I only offer it as additional evidence that no matter how paranoid you are and how often you rest, there are fights you just will not win on the first try.

Of course, I still played all these games to the end, so this fact obviously didn't ruin the experience for me.
