Form is no other than emptiness; emptiness if no other than form. by Mr. Palomar 04/04/2003, 10:58am PST If you will notice, in the Fire Book, Miyamoto Musashi says that “’To become the enemy’ is to think as if one were the enemy” and that “you ought to put yourself in the opponent’s position.” Throughout the Fire Book he continues to develop his strategy, suggesting that “It is important to suddenly do something that the opponent does not expect, and to take advantage of his fear to defeat him.” Then, in the earth Book, there is the grim proverb that “When in a fight to the death, one wants to employ all one’s weapons to the utmost.” In the Wind Book Musashi says that “In my Niten Ichiryu there is a dislike for narrow-minded spirit”. These tactical motifs are omnipresent in his work; in the Water Book he explains that “Small men must know thoroughly what it is like to be big men, and big men must know what it is like to be small men.” Finally, in the epilogue of the Fire Book, Musashi says that “The true way of swordsmanship is to fight opponents and win the fight. Can it be anything other than this?”
