Actually, I won an older version of the game, when it was simply called Hack, and haven't played it in quite a long while, so maybe the version I played was pretty easy in comparison (although a lot of what you're complaining about still held true for it, so maybe not). I also had to exploit the game by writing a simple batch file that would backup my saved games. Therefore, if I ever died, I could easily reload from my last saved location.

So I guess I cheated. Never mind. Nethack IS fucking impossible to win, and the only reward you get for winning is bragging rights over the other freakishly obsessed losers who would probably yell at me for hours on end when they found out about my save-game exploit.
