Are we arguing pronunciation or whether Bush sounds like a moron? They may be related, but I really wasn't talking about the latter. Anyway, whatever. It's outrageous and all that. Someone should do something. SAVE ENGLISH! OH GOD, IT WAS SO YOUNG, WHY'D IT HAVE TO DIE? Didn't I already tell you this hysterical protectiveness about our shared language afflicts every generation that learns to read? Didn't I already tell you that it's nonsense? That was at OMM, maybe you've forgotten. As much as you like to dramatize every single little thing, this is really not a big deal.


Don't be a fuckup. What I'm talking about here is Our Nation's Leaders failing to sound like Our Nation's Leaders. I expect Our Nation's Leaders to pronounce one of the most important words in our arsenal, "nuclear," in straight up dictionary fashion. Why? Because that's what leaders do. At the moment, like it or not, there is a correct way to pronouce "nuclear" and Bush didn't pronounce it that way. Drift of language what? Save English what? The man doesn't know what his own constituents are expected to use and he doesn't seem to recall that their pronounciation is carefully corrected by frustrated second-grade teachers across this great nation. Frankly I'm appalled his wife lets him get away with it.

As for all your other yawn argument: I would think it worries all of us when Our Nation's Leaders start using language in non-standard ways, because stuff like "acceptable losses" is bad enough, but stuff like "freedom hostage" being applied to, say, residents of Saudi Arabia...that's really bad. Just ask the Chinese.
