Download a fucking firewall already. I use Sygate Personal Firewall. It's free and retardedly easy to use. The only major annoyance is that every time your computer starts up you have to click "Register Later," but that's it. Any time any program on your computer tries to access the network it'll pop up a big box saying, "SUCH AND SUCH IS TRYING TO ACCESS THE INTERNET! DO YOU WANT TO ALLOW THIS PROGRAM TO ACCESS THE INTERNET?" Then you choose "yes" or "no," and optionally "Remember my answer." It'll also tell you the exact location of said fruity software, so if it's spyware you'll know exactly where it's located.
Only one thing I can remember has gotten by the firewall since I started using it (over a year ago): Something that deleted the Windows Media Player .exe and replaced it with something else, but when it tried to run and access the internet I knew about it so I could delete it and replace the file.
I have to admit I don't spend my time going to porn sites or other seedy websites, so I don't know how much it'll filter out from actually getting on your computer, but I visit some sites through POE sometimes and log a fair amount of red download arrows (meaning blocked packets). I also do not have Adaware, Spybot, Hijack This, or any other spyware removing software installed. If I have spyware, it's the most ghostly shit in the world that never interrupts anything I'm doing. But if someone wants to point me to a website that's loaded up with spyware (nothing that's going to, like, destroy everything, mind), I'll see how much shit I actually get bombed with. I'LL TAKEONE FOR THE TEAM, OK. |
