-nt means "no talent"
If you think talent's got something to do with it, then you're not getting the geek aesthetic.
And I agree with jeep, but only on the marginal quality part. I'm not looking for talent in a band with a 7 year old on drums. The family looked nervous as hell on TV, so I think whatever aesthetic makes them appealing might have been off. They probably deserve a second chance, though, since they hang with all the antifolk kids at the Sidewalk Cafe in NYC. And, like the antifolk musicians, they're probably only appealing live.
...has anybody ever actually sounded *good* on Conan? I'll never understand why they don't bother getting good sound for their live music. Letterman and Leno are the same way. It sounds like a bootleg, they never get any room sound or any guitar in the mix.
Anyways, to hear the reviews tell it, the star quality comes from the overall experience of watching them narrate these slides with music... like some twisted twee pop version of visiting your crazy relatives. The fact that the little kid plays drums and sings puts the weird pop joy over the top. Plus, "Mountain Trip to Japan, 1959" is better novely pop than anything Too Much Joy ever put out. |
