Are Two Lone Swordsmen truly great or do I just have the worst taste in IDM ever*? Pitchfork's review of this was surprisingly on-point, because the vocals definitely remind me of Einsturzende Neubauten albeit in English, plus there's an undeniable funk-and-groove fueling almost every song on here. Despite that fact, it's still a fairly dark-sounding album, and you'll get more than your fair share of pitchshifting/glitchy antics which serve to remind the listener that these guys are apparently one of the standard-bearers of Warp Records. (I've honestly not heard of TLS until maybe a couple of weeks ago.)
Also, since I believe I read somewhere that these guys used to be known as The Sabres Of Paradise, and I vaguely remember hearing a Sabres remix of an Orb song that turned out extremely good, yet have never seen any actual Sabres material in stores - is anything from the Sabres worth hunting down?
*I dig Amon Tobin, Boards Of Canada, and Manitoba hugely, whereas I cannot get with most of what I've heard from Autechre, Squarepusher and Aphex Twin. In some circles of music fans this makes me a FABIO amongst SS2 fanboys. |
