The only suggestion I can make that these other FUCKS have sadly omitted is Blood 1. But I say this while suffering from a severe case of arachnophobia. For some inexplicable reason, this game caused my fear to kick into ultra-high gear, whereas all other games with spiders have merely annoyed me with them in a "great, now I get to waste my ammo on these stupid things *yawn*". I think it's because the little green spiders of Blood 1 cause you to see tracers.
I agree. Completely and without reservation. No game before and no game since has done spiders as well as Blood. And the landshark in that game was pretty goddamn good, too. One of my all-time most frightening gaming moments comes from that level in Blood where the sharks are in some area of water. I encountered them, took a lot of damage, and then managed to leave the water from where I came. The fucking shark-thing FOLLOWED ME out the pipe and charged me like he was the fucking Rhino or something. I had played so many games done in the Build engine at that point that it never occured to me that a monster could go area hopping like that. The guys who put that game together were brilliant.
And, as you say, Blood II not only killed the franchise in a way that Clooney wearing a nipple-laden batsuit would be envious of, but made no sense whatsoever and was pretty bad as a shooter.
