Is C&C Generals better then Starcraft? I haven't played an RTS since Starcraft that I've liked enough to play more then a month. (I still play Starcraft). The last one I tried and didn't like was Warcraft 3. I've seen Tiberium sun before, and thought it was crap. I've never even bothered to look up a screen shot of generals.
Tiberium Sun is objectively crap, yes.
C&C: Generals is the best RTS since starcraft. Is it better than starcraft? In some ways yes, in others no.
What Starcraft has going for it:
-3 unique sides. There has yet to be another RTS with more varied sides with completely different units using completely different strategies and having it all be balanced. Most games don't even bother and just have all the sides be the same except for a single unique unit per faction (every "Age of" game ever made).
-Tactical options. People were still discovering new things to do with units and their abilities for years after stacraft was released. The discovery of being able to build on your opponent's creep, using an arbiter's recall ability to get your army OUT of trouble instead of in, casting hallucinate on your ally's ultralisks for the ultimate shock force damage sponge.
What Generals has going for it:
-The best god damn pyrotechniques in any RTS game to date.
-Interface refinements that have been made in the genre since starcraft. Little things like right clicking to set factory waypoints. These little things add up after awhile until it's a shock to go back to a game that doesn't have them, like going back to Warcraft 1 after the original Command and Conquer and learning that you couldn't select units via a drag box.
-3 somewhat unique sides. There are definately differences in tactics for each sides, but not to starcraft's level. There are lots of neat little tactical options you can use, but again not to starcraft's level.
I like to think that Generals was the perfect RTS until EA's quality assurance department got ahold of it. It's reasonably balanced (a lot more so than any Westwood RTS since C&C), but it still needs work, work that will never get done since EA's abandoned any new patches. The twelve(!!!) different armies in the expansion (zero hour) definately need tuning. The generic armies from the original are all considerably worse than the specialized generals, the laser and stealth generals suck, the nuke general has all sorts of strengths and zero weaknesses, all U.S. armies are helpless against the U.S. airforce general, the airforce general dominates in certain situations and is helpless in others, the infantry general is flat out better than everyone else, and the superweapon general might as well declare an automatic win if the other player can't rush and beat them within 10 minutes.
So it has a few flaws, but it's still the best RTS since starcraft and well worth playing. Hell, I'm still playing it over a year after release.
P.S.- Do you have a friend who plays starcraft too? Me and a friend used to play it religiously, but stopped after big game hunters ruined random games, and no one would join a game on any other map. If you can find a partner we are so calling you out. |
