Supposing, for the sake of argument, that having every single millitary installation, power plant, etc. for miles around blow up overnight causes the Iraqi army to just call it quits, any civillian suffering ought to be minimal since we'll be moving in right away to (supposedly) rebuild the country. My problem is that I'm not convinced this tactic will work any better than bombing the fuck out of civillian populations in WWII. The Iraqi army might just dig in and try to slug it out even as living conditions deteriorate all around them.
I just love the first frame of that cartoon. Why does the GI look like he's 100 years old?
I disagree. Almost every account of Iraq I've heard from any expatriot portrays the Iraqi people as fed up with Saddam, but still cowering in fear of his ever-tightening fascism. I really don't know where all this absurd hate of the Iraqi people comes from. Granted, they may not be gung ho super America #1, but wtf, it doesn't take an idiot to know that the only thing Saddam is brewing is a serious ass-kicking--his own. By that I mean that even if the average Joe Rasheed Muhammed hates us, fact of the matter is they know that any attempt to instigate an attack is going to get just that and in liberal measure. IF military action is necessary (unfortuantely the clock is ticking) then I think it would be in our best interest to be as gentle as possible with the Iraqi people so as not sow the seed of the next Saddam. Why is it so hard to see this sort of thing as a method of preventing future terrorist attacks?
And let's be honest about the Iraqi army: They're a bunch of witless pussies. I see nothing that will prevent the mass surrenderings we saw in the 90s. In fact, if military intelligence does a little background check I'm sure they'll find the sale of white bed linen spiking right about now.
I'm afraid you've lost me. You disagree: with me? I didn't say anything about hating the Iraqi people (because I don't). Also, the rest of your post is hard to decipher. I guess you're saying that it WILL cause the Iraqi army to surrender, but it could piss off the Iraqi civillians even though I mentioned that if the first is true, then how long before the whole place is run by us with food and water and blankets for everybody? I'm obviously not reading this right. Sorry.
By the way, somebody asked a retired general or somebody about the fact that it'll be hotter than fuck in a few months. The guy apparently thought that was funny and said that we were trained to fight under those conditions as well. So while we prefer to not attack in the summer, we might still do it. Wearing those hazmat suits in the summer could seriously suck though. |
