He is a master programmer and back when one guy did it all, he was the man. He has good taste in things.
He really needed to hook himself up and pair with someone who can see the visceral pleasures in games.
I am not picking on Mr. Crawford with what I am about to say, really, I'm not. There is a piece in Balance of Power called the Scolding Screen. This should be a link to it. Now, this is bold and makes a statement and is very adult. Meanwhile people were draw dicks on the map for DEFCON and everyone enjoyed everything blowing up. You can't reduce 30 years to a single thing but people would be more receptive to his work if it had some sex appeal. If it had a little "oohhhh this is naughty fun, watch them nukes!" to it.
Regarding his work with JavaScript:
He’d call me, we’d discuss it, and eventually he’d say something like, “Where did you terminate the loop beginning at line 563?” There would be a long silence, followed by the tiniest “Oh” from me. I’d thank him for his help and hang up. A week later, I’d be fuming again about another fundamental flaw in Javascript.
He would benefit from an AI coding partner here. How much more effective would he be with Claude Code? A lot, I think.
Late in 2024 I happened upon a mention of Narrascope, an annual conference for interactive fiction held once every June. I knew of the conference from previous references, and it occurred to me that I had one last shot at making interactive storytelling technology available to the world. The attendees of Narrascope were not the techie types I had previously dealt with. These were mostly storytellers, weaker on the technology but stronger on the storytelling side. I decided to make my technology available to them, but to do so I would have to strip away all the technical complexity. I
You gotta make a game that inspired people to want to play it. You can't just give them some tools.
On the big day I arrived at the airport at 5:00 AM to catch the early flight. We sat on the tarmac for an hour because of a mechanical problem, at which point I realized that I could not possibly make a crucial connection. I had to abort the trip to Narrascope and deliver the lectures via video, which turned out to be disastrous.
This can happen to anybody, but man, if this is 30 years of build up, get to the city a couple of days before. COme on man! |
