In this post, I rank all AdP songs. by pinback 04/17/2026, 5:47am PDT
1-4 are virtually tied. The best one is generally whichever one I listened to last.

1. Fabienk -- If there IS one of the top four that stands clearly ahead, it's this one. I previously commented that the groove in the first half of the song was the "sickest groove I'd ever heard in my life up until that point, and it's not even the best one in the song."

2. Yor Zarad -- The lead guitar on this one is my favorite of them all, and that bombastic finish blows me away every time.

3. Mata Zyklek -- I remember seeing the KEXP video of this one pop up on my feed, before I knew anything about it. The thumbnail was goofy enough that I said, eh, sure, looks good for a laugh. About a minute in, I had the same "what in the fuck" reaction that turns out millions of others did. At the end I went directly to Google chat to let my buddy Larry know about it, but there was already a message from Larry in there, with a link to the exact same video, saying "have you seen this yet?"

4. Utzp -- A lighthearted, playful polka... until it isn't. That pause in the middle is the most dangerous 4-bar moment of silence in the history of music.

5. Sherpa -- The only track from Vol. I that makes the top half of this list, I think this is the ultimate AdP song to send to someone to see if they're gonna like it. It is not the best song. It takes one theme and just drives it into the ground until ending with a repetitive, unrelenting sledgehammer to the ears. Pretty much AdP boiled down into a thick reduction. If you like this, you'll love the other ones, and if not, well. More for us.

6. Sarniezz -- We all listened to the KEXP live version of this five hundred times before hearing the studio version, so the studio version sounds a little strange and relatively tame. Still great, though, as the microtones glide up and down like they're watching a lone sock spin around in a dryer.

7. Tamebsz -- The track from Vol. I that gave the first hint of what was to come in Vol. II, with it's multiple sections, cut and pasted together with cacophonic and angular transitions. This one cranks up the noise to the point of what I assume is intentional comedy. Not the most pleasant, but probably the most bizarre track in the catalog.

8. Ababa Hotel -- Most of Vol. I takes a single theme and puts it through its paces. This is the "jazzy" one. Would rank lower, but the guitar solos, particularly the main one toward the end, are too good to knock it any lower than this.

9. Sahardineh -- Pantera's "Walk", filtered through polkadotted French Canadian aliens from the future.

10. Angor -- Vol II's closer feels like it might be the first track they put together after deciding what AdP was going to be. They fire off the simplest possible drumbeat and then just toy with it like a cat with a ball of yarn, endlessly shifting the time signatures and downbeats around it, getting every last drop of rhythmic possibility out of it. But it's the simplest song in the catalog, so it suffers from coming at the end of an album full of astonishing complexity.

11. Tohogd -- Simple theme, microtonal surf rock. It's got a good beat and I can dance to it, I give it an 86.

12. L'Aberek -- Restrained closer to Vol. I. After hearing the rest of the songs in this list, you could be forgiven for listening to this track waiting for it to, you know, do something, which it never quite does.
