| Shadowrun Returns was a 15 hour tech demo. The absolute barest of missions thrown together to show a proof of concept. People were just glad to have any kind of Shadowrun comeback since the 16 bit days.
Dragonfall was one of the best cRPGs ever made. Even if the actual mechanics of Returns were only marginally improved, the mission design and writing made up for it. Hong Kong...yeah pretty much what everyone else here said 10 years ago. It feels like this one was the one step forward after SR Returns, and that Dragonfall would go on to be the 3rd game that nailed it. This isn't bad, but it's astonishing how little there is to a lot of the missions. I've only done five, and half of them were done in a little under an hour. One was 50 minutes with reading every single possible conversation. I talked to 2 people at a party, got a key to a room, then had one fight on the roof. Bam, mission done. Always bring the decker because there are quite a few optional objectives with no other way to succeed. They tried buffing Shaman by simply letting them summon a super golem at the hardest fight in every mission. Shaman are still less useful mages. Riggers have an unnecessary extra step to being useful. Adepts are just less versatile street samurai. Street samurai and mages still by far the best. Of course the street samurai party member you get isn't any good (a bad rifle he isn't good at, zero cyberware). Of course you don't get a party member mage. The writing? Hmmm. There's more to the plot than SR Returns, and even though it is the same writer as Dragonfall, it feels like a different, less talented person trying to replicate the structure of Dragonfall. Is0bel feels pandering. Everyone else, their stories about their past are more interesting than anything I've actually done in the game so far.
