Other games I did not get or understand or really enjoy - Vampire Survivors, Hades. I haven't beaten the first monster of Elden Ring either, and I put a lot of time into that one.
In Hollow Knight, I quickly got to a screen where there was a crying person. We have "jump" and "attack" as our verbs. The crying person was way up on the screen, so I can't interact and even if I could, I only know those two buttons.
Later, I saw the enemy linked below. When I move close, they have their armor close around them and do not attack. When I am a little farther, they spit fire. Okay. I don't doubt that there is something in the expansive levels and boards and screens that will help, but I didn't see anything to pick up and use or whatnot.
Text adventures show you things so that you are motivated to explore to find ways to get around them. So, no prob. I kept playing. It looks nice, sounds nice, feels fluid. It is very responsive. I kept playing and eventually all the equivalent of Sonic's rings fell out of me. There's no ability to save the game except that at a checkpoint that I never saw, going to about 15 different screens, so I am done. I am glad other people are enjoying it and I am glad they made hundreds of millions of dollars. The sequel is only $20, I'll probably get that too. I am missing what others enjoy about it, though.
