Just realized that this slop is probably headed for a Best Picture nominationby Rob Ludden-Joyer 08/31/2025, 7:55pm PDT
and it has a good chance of winning, I expect it won't, but if it's a weak year it has a great chance.
And I'm glad you liked it but I wondered what anybody likes about it at all. It was very vague to me what I was supposed to get out of it aside from warm old timey imagery of rural nons having their own big party - no whites allowed! There's not a lot else there. The main twist with the vampires is a rip-off and it's incredibly unclear what larger point it serves, it's like an extra lego piece for you to affix however you want. It would be great if it were even clearly anti-white in some way but it's vague about everything that doesn't amount to a Ma Rainey's Big Black Bottom postcard.
People seem to enjoy paying money to honor blackness on a large screen, and will probably just start giving black people Oscars whenever they ask for one. Does that feel grim to you, and do you think that maybe you should introspect about what the movie actually does for you aside from this? Like maybe you've just found yourself being swept up helplessly by larger forces?
For the record I liked Barbie and did not like Oppenheimer; people think Barbie was slop but it's a legitimate statement that can be parsed.
