Same as the case with Barbarian, you're almost taken aback watching a modern horror movie with some actual craft behind the camera work after a decade of Conjuring and exorcism slop.
Not sure the vignette narrative approach was the right one. Redlettermedia compared it to Rashomon and Pulp Fiction, but it didn't serve the point of either. It wasn't the unreliable narrator of Rash, or the patchwork of completely different stories of Pulp. Half the stuff is scenes we've already seen with no new meaningful takes (watch the same phone call from a previous scene, but now we see that the other person was grocery shopping during it!).
I got the impression they went with it just to make one scene more of a shock and to stretch out the runtime. If it was a linear story it probably would have been a 50 minute tv episode. There's also two pointless dream sequences to pad things out.
Maybe ding it down to a 7.5/10 for the opening and ending narration. There's nothing there that wouldn't have been more effective without them. Feels like the narration was made just for the trailer, then the studio forced it into the final film to not "confuse" the audience. The dream sequences feel like that too, because you can't have a modern horror film without possessed "Smile" faced children slapped on the trailer.
Def go see it in the theater though. Laugh along with the audience at the ending. |
