On the news everywhere. My brother in Atlanta called to wake me up. Columbia was the oldest shuttle of the bunch, so old that it couldn't even dock with Mir (and I don't think they retrofitted it to dock with the ISS either). At least Mir was able to be retired before it caused the deaths of it's inhabitants.
I'm just stunned. Just stunned.
I hope NASA had a telescope pointed toward the shuttle, because if there was no radio communication whatsoever to indicated what happened, then all they have are their instrument readings (which could be useful but I kinda doubt it) and what we've all seen to help them piece together what happened. A contrail around the typical fireball of re-entry, a sudden piece falling off, an explosion, then everything falling apart. Maybe 3 seconds from start to finish, all at 200,700 feet and "at the speed of a bullet".
FUCK.
The Russians have also lost guys on re-entry before. By being a LOT more careful, we managed to avoid that particular catastrophe until today. What's next for NASA? Will we rely on Soyuz to resupply the space station for the year+ that it takes to recertify the entire shuttle fleet? |
