Trials of Fireby Mischief Maker 03/20/2025, 2:32pm PDT
I've been dabbling in solitaire board gaming recently and found that it's actually pretty neat, with a quality to the experience that isn't found in video games. Rolling a bad die and making the best of it in the board game Under Falling Skies doesn't frustrate me nearly as much as missing 3 shots in a row due to invisible dice rolls in the video game FTL.
But when I try board game ports on PC like Gloomhaven, or Battletech, or the Mage Knight clone Paladin's Oath, I find having the computer around to do the busywork results in an anemic, dissatisfying experience. There's so little to do when the dice and tokens and character sheets are all automated.
But there is one glorious exception, and that is Trials of Fire.
It's a game I liked well enough when I first tried it as a video gamer, but having recently retried it with some boardgaming experience, I think it's genius.
Too complex to enjoy without computer assistance, yet has all the mechanical transparency of a board game, it's the perfect Goldilocks video/board gaming experience.
