Me and the people I like to shoot at do Lans every month or so and the perfect setup so far is a Router with DHCP and a hub (you can get a 4 port for very cheap). The router gives out all the addresses to everyone nicely and the hub(s) comply(ies). Like LaudablePuss said the downside is that the hub will slow the thing down (split your bandwith) but that won`t change anything for game playing, the only problem would be if everyone started sharing large files at the same time. (Like all the idiots I play with do all the time.)
The only problem with DHCP is that if you want to unlock specific ports for other people (internet) you can`t specify them, you need to use static addressing.
But for purely local networks, ONE router and as many hubs as you want are perfect. |
