Enjoyed it until the end. Easier and more forgiving than From Software games but still challenging and fun. I think Lady Ethereal was my favorite boss fight because it was the best balance of challenge without bullshit and feeling intuitive about how to win. The last boss reaches From Software levels of difficulty, but there's clever use of audio and visual cues to help you learn attack patterns and you eventually feel like you're in the fuckin' Matrix. Parrying every attack, counterattacking, and getting comfortable enough to work in jabs and specials in between. Good stuff.
The story doesn't hold up. It's a mishmash of pop culture themes over the last 25 years, a trope everyone hates, mixed in with Chinese mysticism and some philosophy. And it really swings for the fences with philosophy, offering up a sincere answer to the question, "What is the meaning of life?" It falls way, way, short, but it tried, I guess. It still held my attention more than any other game story in recent memory just because it continued to be unapologetically dark in a way that other games have seemed to be too timid to go for. And I don't know if it's a Taiwanese thing or a This Developer thing, but it has not one, but two brother-sister relationships that go way beyond any sort of closeness that I can relate to and becomes borderline / over-the-borderline incestuous. Or maybe it's just my Western puritanical influence making me biased, I don't know.
Overall: POSITIVE! If you like Hollow Knight and Punch-Out, A+ would recommend. |
