It's a very flashy spaceship-based ARPG with just a smidge of roguelike metaprogression. The premise is you're a ne'er-do-well space mercenary who acquires an ancient alien artifact that grants you reality-warping super powers and you have to go on a quest to help the intelligence hidden within. You fly around with WASD and shoot with mouseaim. Most weapons are on 360 degree turrets. You have one unlimited-ammo primary cannon and one ...and the metaprogression kicks in. While runs in this game follow the same campaign with the same basic plot and missions, at any time you can choose to shitcan your run and go back to zero. You're warped into an endless survival arena that grants bonus metaprogression points the longer you survive. Once that's done you're back at the title screen where you "break" your save and spend your points to unlock new systems and give yourself permanent buffs for future runs. New runs set you back to level 1 and wipe out all your equipment save any you get from metaprogression. Thankfully you can just hold down Shift and it'll skim past any repeated dialogue, stopping for any changed lines due to your character's moments of deja-vu. A thing I really like about this game is while it's clearly a tiny-team indie with dated production values, they squeeze every effect they can get out of the engine to make shots have a strong sense of impact. This is not the next Grim Dawn, I'd put it more in a category next to Victor Vran. Enjoying it so far! |
