Distant Worlds 2 - First Impression by Mischief Maker 01/06/2025, 9:26pm PST
Been eyeing this series for years but finally pulled the trigger now that people are saying 2 is finally on equal or better footing than 1.

I never expected the game this would most remind me of would be Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim.

Majesty is my favorite strategy game. I get to make some straightforward decisions, create a bunch of little people, and then sit back while they go about their mighty magical business. High strung as he is, I'm sure the monocle pops out of Geryk's eye any time anyone - and that includes virtua anyones like an orc - does anything without his direct permission. I, on the other hand, couldn't be happier. You say you and the dwarf are gonna go raid a necropolis? I don't even know what a necropolis is, but it sounds like a good plan to me. I'll be the guy over here with a can of Blatz in each hand who's not even touching the mouse.

And that's the experience playing Distant Worlds 2 at the default level of automation. I make a pronouncement that I want a mining station built at gas giant X, then sit back and watch my little ships hop to attention and change their routine to get that thing built. Then watch as freighters that I custom designed pick up the raw materials and independently ship them to my space stations and colonies. Sometimes when I send a constructor to a distant system to salvage an ancient space hulk, an escort frigate tags along on its own to keep it safe.

Also I appreciate that this game generates its starfields procedurally instead of just using a blurry skybox texture.

But on the negative side of things, it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to get a music mod for this game. It has the second worst soundtrack I've heard for a videogame since Sanctus Reach. Someone told the composer they wanted dark and foreboding and the composer thought, "Oh, like a slasher film!" and so it's nonstop dissonant strings beyond the point of irritation. It's a testament to how bad the OST is that nobody's uploaded it to Youtube. Some crazy Frenchman went and composed his own soundtrack from scratch that does the job. I'll take it as a testament to the quality of the rest of the game that someone would go to such lengths to salvage it.
