As I understood, the situation after the time jump was that Arasaka agents were still hunting down David to test the cyberskeleton on him, but Lucy was intercepting and killing these agents so they couldn't find him.
On the flipside, David was doing his merc work with the intent of saving enough to permanently move him and Lucy to the Moon. As shown by this scene against the "tiny birds" guy, the sandevistan alone wasn't enough, his additional mods were necessary to keep him alive. I agree he made a mistake by not going to the doc immediately when he started getting symptoms, but I figured his plan was to stay chromed up enough to survive the missions then downgrade once they had enough money saved to move.
In the end, Arasaka got to them by paying off their fixer (Giancarlo Esposito) and Kiwi to betray them. David's rampage to the Arasaka Tower was the only way Lucy was getting out of it, and the ripperdoc warned David he was going permanently insane once the meds wore off so his plan was to get Lucy off-planet before he snapped.
Cyberpunk stories rarely have happy endings, the fact that Lucy survived to the end and escaped to safety was a miracle on David's part. |
