| You know the recent trend of streaming series that feel like the idea of a 2 hour movie stretched into an entire TV season?
This felt like two TV seasons crammed down into a 2 hour movie. Half a dozen plots flying around that never or barely get any attention or resolving. The main inciting incident almost never comes up after the beginning, and immediately goes away at the end. This was written by the Wednesday Netflix series dude, whose entire career is just adapting old properties into series. I bet anything this project started as a Beetlejuice streaming series, but ended up becoming a movie and the dude took the lazy way out and just squeezed in every vague plot line he had for 2 entire seasons. The most baffling part was the insane amount of attention and screentime Jeffrey Jones' character got. Not the actor, the character. Name drops everywhere. Photographs everywhere. A claymation sequence of him. His headless corpse everywhere. They canceled the actor, then made it a point to constantly bring attention to the character. Fake Jeffrey Jones practically gets more screentime than real Jeffrey Jones did in the original. Baldwin and Davis' characters were swept under the rug and forgotten. Why not the same for the sex offender? The entire movie had one joke that could have been funny if the editing didn't ruin it (showing Beetlejuice a picture of his ex-wife). The theater was around 80% full and I don't think I heard a single laugh the entire time. Has all the Botox been going straight to Winona Ryder's vocal cords? |
