Ward Christensen, co-creator of the dial up BBS, passed away on October 11th, 2024.
My father brought home a modem in 1989 and we got it working so that I could call bulletin boards around Rochester, NY. Over time, I made friends, dear friends I still have today. I started my own BBS within a year. The technology to just communicate with people you could drive to, anonymously if you wanted - it changed my life.
I was late getting on the Internet proper because I loved BBSs so much. I still wish we had modems as part of every computer for the local angle to all of this. I wouldn't be on this site without his work. By all accounts he seemed like a kind, decent, humble man who just happened to have created, along with Randy Suess, one of the most important pieces of technology in my life.
