I think we can all agree that Doug is pure cringe. It's also clear that Doug dislikes Roger Waters' creation. The stuff at the end about how he "liked it fine" is certainly unintentionally hilarious, as is the idea Doug's version is "a love letter" to the original. And the less said about the segment at the end with the furries, the better. Dan is 100% right about all of that.
I think Doug is actually right about a few things, though. The original Wall is way over the top, in a way that's tasteless and a bit juvenile. For example, the clearly intentional imagery conflating Roger Waters' schooling and the horrors of WWII. Come on. Even if your teacher beat you, it's tasteless to compare that to the Holocaust and have imagery of children being fed into a meat grinder.
I also think the "fake nazis" (or whatever you want to call the crossed hammer stuff) in the original Wall movie were cringe-inducing in their own right. First, because it seemed to be glamorizing fascism (something Dan notes). The crossed hammer logo is probably more catchy than the symbolism used by actual British fascism (which semeed to be mostly really wide belts for their pants?) Secondly, because it's clearly how Roger Waters felt about all the political opposition in those days. This is the mentality Doug is parodying with the "your face here" stuff, and I think the parody... kind of lands? At least conceptually, Doug is a horrible actor/writer/producer/etc.
I do agree with Dan that it's a giant WTF that Doug even did a "Wall" movie. It definitely does seem way out of his wheelhouse. The section at the end is hilarious, too.
I am really enjoying these segments where Dan roasts old tubers. I kind of wish he would do Spoony next, but I suspect Dan won't want to do that because of Spoony's well-known mental health issues. And, you know, fair enough. |
