Something about Jonesy just clicked in my head after years of lurking and occasional anon posting. I dunno how you feel about pokemon as a franchise, ICJ. I just can completely see you paying for a year minimum worth of subscriptions to a functional version of this glorified cockfighting MMO to settle calvinball arguments about whether a bear could beat an elephant or whatever you dream up as the next expression of the survival of the fittest.
Admittedly about a million years ago I was interested in the Saga of Ryzome MMO because they a) were taking an incredibly early stab at modeling an alien fantasy ecology on a worldtree rootball kinda planet (whatever, seemed cool at the time, blame the frenchmen who made it) full of herds of prey animals that ran away when you attacked them instead of just having endless rat swarms responding to your presence in their sewer by all trying to run into your starter weapon to a certain death like lemmings. They also had predator animals that came after the herbivore prey critters whose patrol patterns sorta created an image of both fauna types behaving dynamically in their known territory or moving between watering holes or whatever, and all that kinda stuff modeled in a big enough layer cake in terms of different biomes featuring some related content tying them together to try and approximate some kind of video game logic model of a living world in an era that was still fresh off Everquest.
For a while you could instantiate your own content on the service, so I'm sure before the Ryzom Ring service shut down you could've made the gross dogfighting traditions of Europe online with just a bit of adjustment. Despite this, it still took us until recent years for another attempt at a non-cute western-style game about whose online she-wolf fursona would beat everyone else's to be head bitch in charge. |
