Unlike the previous two games, it's no longer an enhanced Gauntlet clone. It's an intentional throwback to that time in the late 90s when Diablo 2 hadn't cemented the ARPG formula and weird action RPGs like Nox were experimenting with the genre.
It scratches a very similar itch to Starcom Nexus for me: a game that delivers the core adventure experience without requiring a doctorate in theory-crafting.
