Except for the pretty awesome first 10 minutes of EVIL DEAD RISE, it's weirdly toothless in its violence and gore. It's very very bloody but all of the gore felt inconsequential to me. It's not scary and it's not funny like the Raimi Evil Deads.
One thing I thought could have redeemed it is if there was any moment in which you didn't know what the characters should do. It's not a spoiler to say that the mother character becomes a Deadite (it's on the poster) but if there had been some ambiguity about whether she could be saved, that would have created some stakes. They didn't try that.
TALK TO ME tries that. Characters make very bad decisions throughout but you're always wondering whether the decisions they're making could be the right ones. Should Pretty Black Lady Protagonist let her friend Australian Saoirse Ronan's little brother do a séance? Probably not!? If he could speak with the ghost of her dead mother, who wants to tell her a secret, how about then?
Because you care about the characters a little, the violence in TALK TO ME hits a lot harder, and because it's not clear the path the characters should take, it's not boring. 4/5 |
