Wednesday releasing piranhas in the pool at the start of episode 1 was the high point of the show. It devolves into yet another dark comedy where they wussed out and stripped their antihero protagonist of everything that could be considered "anti." The end result is more like a "Young Sheldon"-style prequel for Aubrey Plaza's character from Parks & Rec.
Pugsley is now a weak picked-on nerd. Morticia is grossed out by Wednesday's grave-digging and is explicitly identifies as a supernatural optimist. Luis Guzman is less than a pale shadow of Raul Julia's performance as Gomez, and they explicitly state several times that his Gomez would never have the stomach to commit murder. And Fred Armisen plays Uncle Fester as Fred Armisen, of course.
But I will give credit to whoever played Thing in this show, they're the most expressive this hand has ever been.
I wonder just how much algorithms interfere in the writing of these Netflix shows lately, because so many originals have these clashing themes and bizarre pacing where a huge crisis will erupt one episode then get hand-waved away like it's nothing the next.
Wednesday isn't bad, it's just a pale shadow of the Raul Julia movies. I thought the whole point of Netflix originals was to push the boundaries, but here they are being out-edgy'd by a couple of studio films made in the 90s. |
