Imagine telling someone in 2013 that within a decade Scott Adams would be cancelled as some extremist right-wing figure. The strip was synonymous with corporate blandness.
I guess it's edgy and cool now to say that Dilbert was never funny, but it was funny to me. Probably more around late-2000s early 2010s than recently. In any case, the competition was papers re-running old Peanuts strips that MIGHT have made boomers chuckle 7 decades ago (but probably not, it was never a laugh-out-loud kind of strip anyway). Or stuff like Cathy which was even more vapid.
Scott was funny when he wanted to be, but he always beclowned himself when he tried to be a Deep Thinker. He definitely got kooky as he got older, not only about political things but just... in general.
It's a sad way to go out since his comments will be heard by most people as "black people bad," which I don't think was his intention. For someone always spouting off about "master persuaders" he really chose the dumbest possible way to articulate his political opinions this time. |
