Unlike the only Dynasty Warriors I played (the second) this game merely starts out similar. Those first few levels are all about using your hero character to plow through the oncoming forces but as the game progresses the focus shifts. Certainly one can dump all their experience into the leader figure, ignoring troop types and secondary heroes, and you will plow through hundreds of enemies but it will all be plodding as the bodies stack up. Later missions (at least in those oh so fucking pious Ecclecian campaign) there is an active utilization of the troop types, terrain and especially weather. Shooting into the sun? Well you're not going to get clear shots and best pull back your archers after your calvary has caught the enemy in a pincer because arrows won't be nice and not nick the jugular of friendly units. Enemy in a thicket? Torch it. Those are just the shallow runs of the gamut. Later will be sappers, siege weapons, a few aerial units and all sorts of fun.

There are no fucking clunky management features in the middle of the battle. There is a slow and a fast pace to of the unit types, both for sneaking and charging, and a mini map to flank. That's it. All those RPG cock and balls are nestled safely in the barracks between missions.

So is it Dynasty Warriors? No, it is better than Dynasty Warriors.
