Fill my new CD shelf by Bill Dungsroman 01/13/2003, 2:24pm PST
I just bought this new CD shelf, and it's damn empty. And what's on there is overall severely lacking in class and eclectic merit. Plus, I'm tired of most of it. I'm also tired of D/Ling shit and forgetting WTF I burned onto a CD that I titled "Cool Shit #4" or whatever, like that helps. So I ask of you all, what were your favorite CDs (or even Kazaa'ed songs comprising a significant portion of an actual CD) that you have heard over the last year or so, ones that perhaps the public at large (me) might not have bought? Keep in mind that's a pretty large window to operate in, I don't root around in dusty Used CD shops, nor do I diligently scour the web for musical rarities in the dank corners of the web. I am, in essence, a musical philistine, in terms of findimg what I might like more than in liking in what I might find (or have found for me). However, and this is no insult to anyone's particular taste, but I don't intend to buy Jimmy Buffet's Greatest Hits (Bjork's, maybe) or DL all the Final Fantasy Soundtracks, get me?

Here's some of mine, in no order:

Beck - Sea Changes. WTF happened to Beck? Whatever it was, it left him bitter and melancholy, and I like it.
Audioslave - Audioslave. Soundgarden lives, sort of, but certainly more than it did in Chris Cornell's lame solo effort a few years back. It really sounds just what you think Cornell and RatM would sound like together.
Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin. I didn't get into TFL until recently, and this is their best, even though it isn't new.
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing. Because Monty told me to.
Dirty Vegas - Dirty Vegas. Probably because they're local boyz, like The Crystal Method. But they're not like TCM, and their style, epitomized by their 'hit' Days Go By (from the Mitsubishi ad), permeates their CD.
TCM's Tweekend, of course.
Disturbed - Believe. Much more melodic and harmonized (as much as nu-metal is either of those things). Better lyrics, too.

This thread was prompted by one I saw on Qt3 in the same vein. I have some questions regarding the worth of the following, as they were mentioned by the posters there:

And You Will Know Us By the Trail of the Dead - Source Tags and Codes
Amon Tobin - Out From Out Where
Isis - Oceanic
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. There's some controversy whether or not this is worth buying, as it seems to be considered the worst TFL album made, yet it's the latest.

Also, SB and others have pimped Godspeed You Black Emporer. Which, all? And what was that Neutral Milk Hotel CD called, Aeroplane Flies Overhead?

Start pimping.

BDR
