Milli Vanilli was a 1980s singing group fronted by two men who weren't even performing the songs they "sang," just lip-syncing. But, I'm trying to understand what they did wrong. Let's look at a few things.
They were performing songs as if they were the artists, while the actual artists were unseen. Well, so did The Archies, Josie and the Pussycats, and every other cartoon-based groups; they were musical groups where the "performers" were cartoons. The actual performers were never seen.
They just fronted for the actual performers. Well, so did The Partridge Family.
They were lip-synching their performance. Well, I suspect a lot of groups that perormed on some of the music shows of the '60s, '70s, and '80s who appeared on American Bandstand, Soul Train and Top of the Pops did so. Any where instruments that were in their performance but not on stage are strong candidates for this objection.
Maybe they should have had their own TV show...
In short, I'm trying to understand what they did that hadn't been done before.
