| Who the hell thought the best way to adapt HGTTG was by turning it into a manic-pixie-dreamgirl rom-com?
Arthur Dent is too boring for manic-pixie Trillian, who leaves the party with Zaphod instead, but Dent still gets the girl in the end by default because Zaphod turns out to be mega-hitler. I suspect the reason they made Zaphod so much more stupid and evil is some kind of ham-fisted swipe at Bush jr's presidency. Also why not just give Zaphod a single head in this adaptation? Why give him that disgusting neck-head, then add a boring unfunny scene where John Malkovich cuts it off? I will at least give the film credit for excellent casting and a much more manic tone than the dry and lifeless 1980s BBC adaptation. |
