LIke every other schmuck on the planet, I am currently writing down anecdotes of my life. At the moment, I am focusing on times when I was manic. Here is a short description of one of those times.

I put spaces between the paragraphs for readability, as Tab doesn't work here, nor do five spaces, and I don't know the html tag (if there is one) for Tab.

I once knew a girl named Denny. Actually it was more that I knew “of” her, since we only met one time. The meeting was so short and awkward – a tension between us that was partially of my own creation – that I barely even remember it. Nor do I recall where it took place.

Perhaps we met at a restaurant, or maybe someone’s class reunion or other such event. My old friend Jeff was there. Jeff had dated my best friend way back in seventh grade, and I had asked him to date me in tenth. He had turned me down, using the age-old excuse of being “too busy”. However, our friendship remained.

He came over to me and we talked for a brief time. I remember being happy to see him there. I agreed to stop by his table before I left. When I got around to where he was sitting, I saw that he was with a young lady.

“Sue, I would like you to meet Denny,” said Jeff.

Denny…the name kicked around in my mind and tripped on several places.

“There’s only one ‘Denny’ that I’ve heard of,” I started, without thinking how my memories might affect the situation, “Are you the one who used to call Grayle back when he was living in Oregon?”

Denny looked taken aback. “Yes…” she said uncertainly.

“I know you then!” I exclaimed, proud of myself for making the connection. “I was living in Oregon in that house with Grayle, and Vickie, and all them! I used to hear ‘Hey Grayle, Denny’s on the phone!’ all the time!”

Denny smiled thinly and made a short nod.

“Oh hey, so you must also be the Denny with the Mom who’s a photographer!” I continued babbling, “I saw pictures that she took of you in her studio! Yeah, she saw me and Eric – do you know Eric? – looking for videos in her store, and she wanted to photograph us. So we spent a day in her studio having our pictures taken. Said she was going to enter them into a contest, but I never heard back from her so I don’t know what happened with that.”

Denny said nothing. Jeff was smiling up at me, but I don’t remember if he was pleased or annoyed with my memories tirade.

“Well anyway,” I said, in an attempt to conclude, “it’s just so great to finally be able to put a face to all of these times when I heard your name! It was great meeting you! We should keep in touch, we have a lot in common through all these ties!”

“Sure,” said Denny quietly. I had a feeling suddenly that she had never really wanted to meet me in the first place. I wondered what Jeff had said about me, and how much he seemed to like me in her eyes.

“OK, well nice meeting you! Nice talking to you Jeff!” I said, and made my way back to my other friends.

Whoever they were. Wherever that took place.
