So how does it end? Do we win and get the girl?
No.
I think this is the second time you've posted this summary, more or less.
Second time for a good portion of it, but there's new developments every day. New developments that I am forced to track, thus leading me to believe that everyone will find them fascinating. In particular the popular reaction of the Japanese and the new factor of the pro-conciliation South Korean president-elect are putting a little spin on the ball: before it was only clear that the Japs had something to gain, now it's more clear that the US has a whole lot to gain from a disobedient North Korea.
That bit about the abductees always confuses me. Why were they taken? How could NK demand them back? Pretty strange.
They were captured over 20-30 years by North Korean agents in Japan - why is anyone's guess. Some were children, some cab drivers, it's not like these were the top scientists and bureaucrats or anything like that. While in North Korea most of them started families, and one of them married an ex-pat/AWOL US Marine who is still in North Korea with their children.
The North Koreans claim the abductees as citizens of the DPKR, and when they were allowed to visit it was supposed to be just that: a visit, intended to quell popular dissent over granting aid to, you know, a nation that has been stealing its people. The DPKR can afford to be assholes about the abductees because the Japanese were much, much bigger assholes during the Japanese colonization of the Korean penninsula in the early part of the last century - which is ostensibly the reason why the summit and aid were even talked about in the first place. In particular the Japanese have been very hard on Korean immigrants so the North Koreans, who have an interest in improving living standards for their ex-pats, can claim that the abductees are better treated in Korea than they will be in Japan and stuff like that.
Sounds gay, but that's North Korea for you. Incidentally Japan was once in a similar position with respect to Japanese immigrants in America. |
