A very stupid John Carter article by laudablepuss 03/13/2022, 1:38pm PDT Here. If you can see it through all the ads. The premise is that the John Carter stories are a "beloved and highly influential property". I'd suggest that is untrue. They are "the inspiration for some of the most iconic sci-fi of all time — from Star Wars to Dune." But John Carter *isn't either of those*. The article thinks the movie "fell apart thanks largely to a misguided marketing campaign". Right. Like taking "of Mars" off the title did it in. Those people in marketing who didn't know what it was and didn't care? They're just like virtually every moviegoer in America in that regard. Who wants to see fantasy Mars? And one that set in the 19th century? Is anyone clamoring for a Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court movie? I think those guys were a little closer to contemporary when the stories were written. So who wanted this? As the article points out, someone at Disney thought "we need our own Star Wars" and so went to the garbage source material. Or anyway, material that hasn't aged well. I haven't seen this movie. Have any of you?
