I thought everyone knew that you're not supposed to say stuff like this in email any more? Did these guys step out of a time warp from the 1990s?
At my last job I did some software engineering for a company that made manuals for Boeing (among others). Being stuck in the 90's is very real with these large companies. Boeing was pretty bad, but there was another that was still using Adobe 5 (and a very specific version of it) because it relied on a bug in how it laid out the fonts. If I remember correctly, Boeing was using an ancient version of Adobe FrameMaker (with SGML!) because it had to do with whatever printer they used from the 90's and it would only parse FrameMaker files from a specific version and they didn't want to pay to upgrade it.
Same here. Worked at a place up until a couple months ago where the internal calendar to requesting time off would only work with Internet Explorer. And they were smug about it. Harrumph. You mean you don't have it installed? Works with IE. ;) ;0 Oh cant get time off? Calendar works with IE. ;) ;) ;0
My personal paradox is realizing that if a large company has many worthless layers of bureaucracy then it will be infested with worms that ensure that everyone knows about their own professional worthlessness and they will clog the works up constantly. Whereas you would think that if someone were aware that they did a bullshit job, a job that if it was eliminated, would make things go more smoothly, that they would want to do it silently, competently and well. |
