Polio is spread through the fecal-oral route which makes it much less of a threat in the modern world than a disease spread through respiratory droplets and aerosols. You cannot get polio by someone breathing on you; you have to actually ingest their poop. Which is easier than it sounds (through flies landing on poop and then on your food, changing a baby's diaper, toilet aerosols, etc.) but still easier to protect against than COVID-19.
I do think that people should get the COVID vaccine, and I got it myself. I'm just a little tired of people constantly using vaccines to dunk on their perceived political opponents. I would feel differently if there was any realistic hope of eliminating the virus, but there just isn't (more on that later...) Trump literally was behind the initial big push to speed up vaccine development; the people who don't want the vaccine didn't make their decision based on "a Democrat in the White House." And you know the demographic that is most resistant to vaccines? Blacks and hispanics. Somehow there's not a lot of dunking on them despite this obvious fact. I guess they're not "the enemy" so nobody cares.
I said this before, but I'll repeat it yet again. Vaccines aren't 100% effective; already more than half of new COVID cases in the UK are among the vaccinated. Even if the vaccine were 100% effective, and we somehow managed to vaccinate everyone in the country, there would still be places like Pakistan where that wasn't true. All it takes is one of those people to take a flight to the US, cough on some people, and the virus is back.
Given that the current US regime refuses to close the borders, for any reason, ever, the chance that I will die in a COVID-free United States is pretty much 0%. So all this brouhaha is really over nothing; there's no way to win and the only question is when we'll figure that out. Hopefully we'll figure that out sooner than we figured it out in Afghanistan. Or maybe we'll just spend the next 20 years cowering in our bunkers. I don't really care; I don't like people anyway. But I feel bad for the kids.
I have no idea who you're arguing with. I don't even think Rafiki is saying Covid can be wiped out. But if you nail your flag to that mast I guess you're a winner in a game nobody was playing. I like mixed metaphors.
END THE PANDEMIC. Remember? Just take the steps to protect your citizens. But apparently it's totally illegal for the government to do that, unless we're talking about closing the border.
Yes, certain minorities are highly resistant to getting the vaccine. I think you posted a link implying that memory of previous government lies and/or shenanigans was one reason for not taking the vaccine -- pretty sure that applies here. Yes, it's a problem. And by the way, the government shouldn't be lying or doing fucked up shit like -- I didn't click the link. Whatever it was. Instead of yelling BOTH SIDES (like some people, not that anyone here has), what if we all demanded better and voted that way?
Hypothetically, if the US had a highly vaccinated population and people wore masks and didn't act like idiots, and the pandemic was basically over here, and new case numbers were miniscule, maybe I dunno, we could do something to help the rest of the world get there too. Just by being an example has helped in the past. Not that we need to end the pandemic here before we help others, of course.
The vaccines don't just help prevent infection. They also dramatically reduce the likelihood of having a severe case of the disease, which also means they dramatically reduce the likelihood of dying of the disease. And these aren't the final word, people are still working on better vaccines. These mrna things are really incredible and it's fucking amazing that we have something that works this well this fast. It took 50 years of research to get here (there's a good sci-show episode about this here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPeeCyJReZw). We should all be celebrating this instead of freaking out like morons.
I'm glad you're vaxxed. I don't understand where you're coming from with all of this. Your hypothesis about specifically covid anti-vax attitudes . . . well I think you're mistaken but I'm tired so whatever.
