I had bad experiences with paying full-price for DRM'ed games in the past that no longer work for me, and there are many indie games that disappeared off the internet that I still have thanks to the fact that I was able to burn their DRM-free installers to disk before they died. Maybe Steam will be forever, maybe not, I just feel better about shelling out $60 for a game when I know it's mine in perpetuity.
But holy shit the other GOG users are fucking bat-shit!
WH40K Battlesector came out this week, and I thought it was a slightly disappointing game that could shine with DLCs.
But someone else on the site discovered a button in the options menu that leads to a boilerplate disclosure page about gameplay data taken by Unity games, with an option to opt-out. You know, the same optional data that every other game has taken for the past several years.
So like sane human beings, they started a massive review-bombing campaign of 1-star customer reviews saying things like "They're SPYING ON US!!!" Here's the store page, note that only two reviews actually talk about gameplay and they're way at the bottom. Page 2 is even better, people are taking fights from the game release thread and sniping at each other with reviews.
And the thread is just bonkers! Self-righteous nerds talking about how their review-bombing campaign is the last front in the battle for consumer rights, nevermind that 90% of the games they're already playing are taking data.
Did quarantine do this to people? |
