Full trailer questions by Villenueve doesn't get it 07/22/2021, 7:47am PDT
- Brief shot of the Guild Heighliners, which look more like the Doomsday Device from Star Trek instead of the nice perfect cylinders of yesteryear. Annoying.
- Halleck yells "GET EVERYTHING WITH GUNS OFF THE GROUND!", presumably during the surprise attack on House Atreides on Dune. Landsraad do not fight with guns because everybody has shields and even if your shields don't work, the Harkonnens & Sarduakars sure as shit do. It's clear that Villenueve isn't willing to treat his audience with intelligence so they realize guns are mostly fucking useless in this universe. 30 years later and still making the same compromises Lynch had to!
- Leto: "The Emperor asks us to bring peace to Arrakis". I can't remember him ever describing the change of fief this way, publicly or privately. Again, I don't think Villenueve understands feudalism.
- Why is Paul holding (presumably) a Maula Pistol when he encounters Chani? A Duke's son does not fight like this.
- The scene of Paul in full armor fighting with Sarduakar is presumably based on his visions of the Jihad "Crusade". I get the visual motif he's trying to convey - knights fighting in armor, JUST LIKE OLD TIMES, but again it misses the point of the Holtzmann shield. Find a more subtle analogy, Donald Kaufman.
I'm still going to see it because aesthetically it looks like it does the universe justice, even if much still lacks color. But in terms of screenwriting I feel like it's just suffering from the same problems Lynch did.
