| Right down to the same cast as Cabin Fever.
Whereas The Wicker Man had you squarely on the side of the protagonist, doled out the fucked up shit at a masterful pace, and surprised you at the end, Midsommar does the exact opposite. You hate all the characters from the start and want them to die, a human sacrifice happens at the 30 minute mark yet everyone continues on as though it's an eccentric harmless community, and your immediate guess that it's going to end up exactly like The Wicker Man is never thrown a curveball. When it came time for director Ari Aster to decide which version of The Wicker Man to use for the ending, his decision was "Why not BOTH!" Overall, not bad, but terribly overrated and not nearly as clever as everyone is tripping over themselves to declare. It's 2020's Get Out. Jay nailed it on the Half in the Bag Review. |
