MOULIN ROUGE by Fullofkittens 04/26/2021, 8:41am PDT In the 2nd half of the 90s, we were trying to figure out what postmodernist music and film was supposed to be like now that sampling is illegal. When I saw MOULIN ROUGE at the time I saw it as a director taking a Big Swing at doing for pop music what PULP FICTION did for gangster movies: throwing them into a grinder and trying to rearrange them into something cool and new. At the time I was also very interested in postmodernist music of that type and doing pastiches and such, and I was grateful to Baz Luhrmann for trying this because now we can see that it doesn't work and everybody else can be satisfied with that and never try it again.
