Did no one else play it? I'm just starting it, maybe 4 hours in. It's like if Platinum Games made a Treasure game. So like a bullet-hell shooter with constantly changing camera angles, which then shifts into Bayonetta combat that sometimes still has bullet hell shooter mechanics, and an impossibly sexy main character with a dress hiked up for infinite panty shots. And no one does spectacle like Platinum Games. For example, one random enemy is a giant robot that bends over backwards into a birthing position and then fires mini-robots out of its robot vagina? like Bullet Bills. And that's just a set up for the big reveal shortly after.
I don't want to give much detail on anything, because so far it's been pretty entertaining going in blind. All I will say is that aliens invaded Earth via robots for some reason, so humanity fled to the moon and is fighting back with an army of androids comprised of hot lesbians rocking some wicked badonkadonks and one beard. You play Buffy the Vampire Slayer with your trusty sidekick Dick Grayson, boy-toy wonder.
I was loathe to start this because I'm loathe to start any new game out of anticipation I'll need to set aside 3 hours since I feel like the first 90 minutes of modern games is often boring cutscenes and constant action interrupting tutorials. So I was pleased that in about 30 seconds I was in a fighter jet playing a rail shooter, and then that eventually gave away to the on-foot combat. Then it comes to a screeching halt when it introduces open-world exploration. I'm not too sure about that part, but if you stick to following the quests it's ok so far. Their ambition may have gotten away from them, and maybe they should have stuck to levels, though. I don't know. It's still early.
It's evident how much other games are ruining things because in this game you get a little turret that follows you around and can fire bullets indefinitely. There's no limit! It took me awhile to get accustomed to this, because I kept automatically releasing the fire button because I was subconsciously afraid of the fun meter being depleted, which would require me to wait for it to slowly recharge or for me to find a vendor to buy power-ups to refill my fun meter. Platinum just decided, "Fuck it, shoot as much as you want, we'll just make it do low damage and give enemies more health."
JONESY WARNING: You can only save at designated save areas. The game tells warns you before you're even allowed to start not to forget there's NO. AUTOSAVE. |
